9/30
Dear First Grade Families,
I hope you're enjoying this cool weather. The weather has been unpredictable these days so please send a jacket or sweatshirt to school.
Math: The students will continue to solve word problems with a missing part/addend. Please practice math facts with your child as this will help them get through their "sprints". We also did a CGI problem that you'll find on our math bulletin! I'm impressed!
Grammar: We will focus on nouns, verbs and adjectives.
Comprehension: We will focus on what the problem is in all the stories we read this week and notice how they are solved.
Word Wall Words: very then just
Phonics: We will continue work with short vowel words and learn the reasons why the vowels are short. Your child has learned the vowel song which helps to learn the sounds that all of our vowels make. Ask you child to sing it to you. It's about a doggie and how he hurt his paw!
Reading Workshop: In Reading Workshop we have learned how readers improve their reading by using good habits and this week we will talk about some bad reading habits we have and strategies to get rid of them! All students have their own book bag filled with books at their reading level and will choose two non fiction informational books next week! It's so nice to see the students interested in reading books at their level!
Writing Workshop: The students are now revising their small moment story using their green growing pen working to expand their sentences, add more details and add more to set the scene for their story. Some students are now on the next level of editing and are using the red pens to check for spelling and grammar. Oh what fun! Next week, the students will design a title and "about the author" page.
Rotations: Starting soon, each Friday, all first graders will rotate between the three first grade classes to work in science, social studies or art. I will be teaching science!
Star of the Week: Please check the blog for your child's week and if you need to change your week or any of the activities, please just let me know. We are so excited to learn more about our new
classmates.
With the cold and flu season already HERE, I am asking for donations of antibacterial wipes and tissue to keep our desks clean. I try to wipe them after school but I'm running low on wipes. Thank you!
A class list with emails and phone numbers were sent home today. Please keep this handy!

Rio’s Harvest Festival is coming up on 10/11 5-9pm at the lower playground! Fun for the whole family! Music, games, prizes, food trucks, interactive attractions and more! $25 unlimited wristbands for all carnival games goes on sale soon! This event is truly a community building one and one of the students’ very favorites of the whole year!
We need LOTS of volunteers to make this evening a success! The festival can’t happen without parent volunteers, and as of now many many slots have not been fullfilled. Please consider signing up for an hour to help. You can help set up, help at the ticket booth, sell popcorn, sell cotton candy, sell shaved ice, pass out prizes, and more! Your child will get such a kick out of seeing you out there!
