Week of 9/23

Dear Parents,

I hope you're enjoying the last bit of summer!  The first day of autumn is on September 23rd. The students are excited about the many changes that happen during this time!

Math: We will continue for a couple more weeks to work in this first module of Engage New York working on fluency with addition, numbers to 10, and then work our way into subtraction. The students are learning many different math strategies to solve an equation and most importantly, learning to use THE MOST EFFICIENT one. The students have been subitizing numbers to 20 and they are becoming experts on detecting five and ten groups within ten-frames, dots or other objects. Again, daily work at home in Zearn and using flashcards will help your child.  Zearn cards were sent home on Friday.  Please look for it and have your child practice logging in and out of Zearn.

Grammar: We will focus on capitalizing names and using the correct punctuation.

Comprehension: We will focus on cause and effects noticing why and how things happen in a story.

Word Wall Words:    by       did     our

Phonics: We will continue work with short vowel words and learn the reasons why the vowels are short. Your child has learned the vowel song which helps to learn the sounds that all of our vowels make. Ask you child to sing it to you. It about a doggie and how he hurt his paw!

Reading Workshop: Reading Workshop has started and we will continue working in Unit One learning how readers build good habits as well as learning how reading partners work together to build their skills.

Writing Workshop: We are working in our narrative unit of Writers' Workshop, writing about a small moment.
They have worked through the first stages of writing and will pick a seed (their favorite draft) next week. Their unedited drafts and their gathering sheets went home. My hope is that you will work with your child to one of those drafts and take it to publication at home!

Handwriting: We will continue learning how to write all the alphabet letters, capitals and lowercase, the first grade way.
Some students will be a part of our WRITING club on Fridays to work on handwriting. Support at home will benefit your child’s progress. Thank you!

Growth Mindset:  We continue to learn about our brains and how we can grow and learn.  We had a mindful eating activity last week with apples. The students used their senses to eat slices of apples slowly and mindfully.  We will continue to practice ways to have a growth versus fixed mindset.
Science:  We will continue our study on apples/fall.  We did an experiment a couple of weeks ago that led us to believe that lemon juice will help apples from turning brown!  Ask your child about this fun experiment!

Star of the Week: Information about this program was sent home last week.  Please contact me if you didn't get it.

Take home folders: Please take time to enjoy looking over your child's work DAILY and help your child remember to bring the empty folder back to school each day.
